As the days grow cooler and the leaves begin to change, apple picking season kicks off across the Carolinas. Whether you’re planning a family outing, a cozy weekend getaway, or just want to enjoy some fresh fruit and fall treats, the region offers plenty of orchards to explore. Here are some of the best spots for apple picking in the Carolinas, plus tips to make the most of your visit.

Carrigan Farms
Mooresville, NC | ~35 miles from Charlotte
Carrigan Farms, a family-owned staple since 1975, offers a true pick-your-own experience. Take a hayride to the orchard, choose from a variety of apple types, and round out your visit with a stop at the pumpkin patch or petting zoo. Reserve your spot online before you go.

Windy Hill Orchard & Cidery
York, SC | ~28 miles from Charlotte
Known for heirloom apples and award-winning hard cider, Windy Hill is a favorite for both families and adults looking for a day date. Come for the apples, stay for the cider tasting and live music. Check their website for apple variety updates and event schedules.

Sky Top Orchard
Flat Rock, NC | ~100 miles from Charlotte
With sweeping Blue Ridge Mountain views, Sky Top is a long-time favorite for families. Along with a wide selection of apples, you’ll find wagon rides, a bamboo forest, a playground, and plenty of apple-themed treats, including their famous cider doughnuts. No reservations are needed, but weekends can get busy, so early mornings are your best bet.

Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard
Hendersonville, NC | ~110 miles from Charlotte
A fourth-generation orchard offering over 25 apple varieties, Stepp’s is packed with fall fun — from a corn maze to wagon rides and a pumpkin patch. The farm market sells fresh cider, pies, and other apple goodies, so make sure you save some room in the car for take-home treats.

Apple Hill Orchard & Cider Mill
Morganton, NC | ~75 miles from Charlotte
Nestled in the South Mountains, Apple Hill offers a variety of apples throughout the season. Their cider mill produces fresh cider daily, and the on-site bakery serves pies, fritters, and other sweet treats. Be sure to purchase your “picking pass” online ahead of time to reserve your spot.

Perry Lowe Orchards
Moravian Falls, NC | ~60 miles from Charlotte
With over 30 apple varieties grown across six generations, Perry Lowe offers an authentic orchard experience. U-pick apples, fresh cider, and dried apple snacks make this a great family outing. Reservations are required for picking.

Tips for a Great Apple Picking Trip

  • Know the Season: Most orchards run mid-August through late October, but exact dates vary. Always check the orchard’s website or social media for variety updates and weather closures.
  • Dress for the Orchard: Wear comfy clothes, sturdy shoes, and sun protection. If rain is in the forecast, a light jacket or boots can be a game changer.
  • Bring Your Own Bags: Some orchards provide bags or baskets, but reusable totes are a safe bet.
  • Arrive Early: You’ll get the best selection and avoid afternoon crowds.
  • Treat Yourself: Apple cider doughnuts, slushies, pies, hard cider — part of the fun is enjoying the flavors of the season.

No matter which orchard you decide to visit, apple picking is a perfect way to celebrate the season and enjoy some quality time with loved ones. So grab your basket and make the most of this fall tradition in the Carolinas!
